Busy schedule…

Sunday, June 24th, 2007

Well, I’m back from my camping trip with a lot of bug bites but at least I’m alive. On the blogging front, I intend to devote a detailed entry to the event in the near future. With this entry I just might get Gallery going on my website…but, probably not. I’ll also be writing up an entry for the twelfth episode of sola which I just finished watching minutes ago. I also have a few uncategorized entries planned but as they are (shockingly) “generic” and really serves no purpose for my readers, I’m not going to enumerate them here.

This next week’s going to be rather action-packed since it’ll be my team’s last work week before we present a somewhat-workable demo to our mentors on July 4th (although let it be known that we are way behind schedule, regrettably). We’ll be having a “Future Blue Day” event in the Ottawa lab on Tuesday which is some kind of a student-oriented…thing, at IBM, losing a whole work day right there, yikes. On Wednesday there’s a golf tournament thing in the afternoon-evening-ish time range which I now realize is actually in direct conflict with my intent of watching Live Free or Die Hard on its opening day. Dang, I really dropped the bomb this time by accepting to go on this stupid tournament.

Not around from Thursday to Sunday…

Wednesday, June 20th, 2007

On Thursday and Friday, I’m going to be at Algonquin Park’s Eco-Lodge doing some canoeing and then on Saturday and Sunday I’m going to be camping at Whitefish Lake (quite literally, as in, sleeping in a tent). So if you’re looking for me and I ain’t around, you now know why. Drop me an email if you need anything and I’ll try to get back to you on Sunday night or on Monday. No I can’t get back to you before then because there is no Internet access out in the wilderness. And of course, power outlets will be scarce to none, so it’s like how is Remy going to write code? I guess I’m not going to be writing code.

Might’ve died there…

Or maybe not, or well, at least I wouldn’t be feeling well enough to write this now. I was in a biking accident just now about a minute’s biking distance away from work (yes I’m typing this from work). Essentially, my bike went off the pavement and onto the grass and for instinctive reasons, I tried to steer it back onto the pavement. That didn’t really work since I didn’t have enough momentum (or whatever), so I ended up being stuck and then the bike just fell sideways down onto the pavement.

My helmet saved my head but not my sunglasses. The legs appear to be bent way too off for me to be able to fix it with brute force. I can technically still wear it though it’s loose and slightly lop-sided which I’ve always felt is probably bad for the eyes. Well, at least I still have my regular glasses in addition to a spare pair at home.

At least I’m still alive, I guess. The only real injury I’ve suffered is a scratch on my left knee. Other monetary possessions that have been damaged includes my helmet where the visor part essentially completely broke off. Well, to be honest, I wasn’t expecting much out of that plastic part from twenty dollar helmet. My bike’s front wheel is also slightly off. So while the steering…handle (?) is aligned properly, the wheel’s tipped over to the left. It was kind of weird biking the last bit to work having to twist the handle to the right a bit so that I could go straight.

It’s hot, really hot…

Well, it’s either that or biking thirty minutes to commute to work is a strenuous task. At any rate, it’s a good thing that the place where I’m living has an air conditioner that’s tweaked at the right temperature. Good lord is it cold at work! I have to bring a jacket along just in case it’s not really right…which it almost never is.

Finding a balance…

Wednesday, May 23rd, 2007

Life’s tough and you never really have enough time to do all the things you want to do and all the nothing you want to sit around and do. Of course, since there’s never enough time, you just have to try and prioritize and put in your best effort into the things that matters and hope that the half-assed effort you invested in the other “supposedly less important” things somehow works out alright. Anyway, let’s see what’s on my plate (in no particular order)…

  • work stuff
  • read this book on Lisp/Scheme that I got from McQ
  • open source
  • anime
  • blogging

There’s a lot of stuff that needs to be read and researched for work in the hope of making an educated decision on what our project should do. Beyond the technical feasibility, there are also business considerations to be factored into the equation. All this planning business certainly isn’t my strength so I’ve been keeping pretty quiet throughout all of our meetings. I think I say less than three sentences in a meeting and often only when someone is addressing my directly.

I’ve always been intrigued by Scheme ever since I first heard a software engineering student from the class of 2006 mention it at CUSEC in 2005. The book itself is spans a respectable 500 or so pages. I can’t say that I’ve actually planned it all out just yet as to how much progress I’ll make per day, but I’m hoping to get the book finished. I mean, it’s only right for you to finish a book that someone has lent to you, right?

The Europa simultaneous release for Eclipse beckons day after day. There are some interesting problems that need to be tackled in ECF and some of them are at the API level. Due to our heavy usage of interfaces, this can all get pretty dirty since there’s not much you can do about bad API design once you’ve released something since you can’t just change interfaces around (minus deep analysis of the problem and superinterfaces and subinterfaces) without breaking API. It’s tough. It might look good during the design phase and all, but once it’s out in the wild, who knows how someone will implement it.

I’ve got a lot of shows to watch. I could easily finish a series or two every week, but it’s of course questionable as to whether I really want to do that since it eats up a lot of time. This is certainly the most relaxing of my tasks but is probably also the most useless since I’m not really doing anyone any favours besides myself. Could my time be better spent on IRC answering questions on #eclipse? I don’t know.

Blogging takes up a lot of time too, surprisingly. If you don’t blog you obviously wouldn’t know, but it actually does. For long entries like this one, I can easily spend well over thirty minutes on it since I don’t usually have a direction for my post before I start writing my post (well, minus the anime blog entries since they all follow the same format of three paragraphs’ worth of text embedded within four sections of images). I end up doing a lot of deleting and rewriting, actually. Prior to posting I’ll read it over once to check for mistakes, and then again after I’ve posted to make sure I haven’t missed anything. It’s amazing how many mistakes slip by, really. Or maybe it’s sad how many mistakes slip by?

Brief leave as of today…

Friday, May 11th, 2007

As aforementioned, I have been typing these blog entries on my brother’s notebook since my notebook died. I am flying to Ottawa today at 1230 and is expected to arrive at 1330. I am expected to report in at work at 0830 on Monday but it is not known to me as to when we will be receiving our notebooks, so I have no idea as to when I will be back online.

Please email me directly if you folks need me for anything. While I (obviously) may not be able to reply if I cannot get access to a computer with Internet by borrowing someone else’s computer when I arrive at my housing place in Kanata, you can be assured that I will get back to you as soon as I get my hands on that Thinkpad and have some leisure time to check my email. Peace, folks.

Not much to say, really, since the title of this blog entry says it all and I’m sure you guys aren’t blind to that image that’s on the right hand side. If you’re reading this from an rss feed, you can follow the link here instead. I’m not going to keep a backlog and will just rotate the file directly as I go, if you want something just tell me since I keep all my walls. All walls will be in PNG format to preserve the quality, make your own JPGs if you got a problem with that.

‘Children of Men’, check it out…

I just finished this film and I have to I have to say that this film was surprisingly good. The premise itself should be sufficiently interesting enough to draw your attention, really.

The ending was well played, really. It could’ve gotten really tragic, but it didn’t go that route. I think you guys should know it means a lot to me when I compliment an ending for not being “too tragic”. I might have had to shed manly tears if it did. Well, okay, no, but still, it would’ve been a real downer.

Packing sucks…

Thursday, April 19th, 2007

I probably complain about this every single time I’ve had to move…so…here we go again. Like most things in life, it’s not as bad once you get the ball rolling, but looking at the mess in front of you generally tends to make you want to worry about it later.

Got my laundry back, alright…

Kitty apparently heard some activity downstairs yesterday (this morning) at around 0200 which signalled that the people downstairs might actually not have went home. So I woke up this morning to the fact via a note that Sam had left for me on my door, which prompted me to attempt to get to the basement at around 1030 and around 1230 today. No dice, though.

We heard sounds later at around 1430 and Sam managed to get a hold of the person by talking “across the door” (it’s locked between them and me). The dude said to come on over so I moseyed on downstairs and grabbed my clothes from the drier.

All is well in the universe once again, my good readers, at ease, at ease.
